Dr. Steven Sampson and Dr. Danielle Aufiero Publish New Article on the Use of Stem Cell Therapy for Treatment of Cartilage and Bone Disorders:

The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) founder Dr. Steven Sampson, along with TOBI faculty, Dr. Danielle Aufiero, have recently published an article titled Stem Cell Therapies for Treatment of Cartilage and Bone Disorders: Osteoarthritis, Avascular Necrosis, and Non-union Fractures in the journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The review article discusses emerging applications of mesenchymal stem cells for bone-related disorders such as cartilage degeneration, avascular necrosis, and fractures.

The review discusses emerging theories on the pathophysiology of Osteoarthritis, as well as the promising rise of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) or “Medicinal Signalling Cells” for cartilage regeneration. In addition, the article delves into more detail on the most frequently used source of MSCs, bone marrow derived MSCs. The article describes the most recent case series on the application of bone marrow derived MSC’s, as well as the authors’ recent, yet unpublished, data on the use of bone marrow concentrate for joint osteoarthritis.

Furthermore, the review article highlights the most current data supporting the use of bone marrow concentrate or bone marrow derived MSC’s in the treatment of avascular necrosis and fractures.

The article states that although human safety and efficacy data are increasing, there is currently limited data on the therapeutic efficacy of same-day bone marrow concentrate therapy in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Further research is warranted to validate preliminary results, including larger randomized human studies, examination of mechanism of action, and trials to develop standardized cell harvesting techniques and optimal cell concentrations.
